Youth Basketball Training in Tempe for Boys & Girls: Skills Lab

By October 16, 2026No Comments

Looking for youth basketball training in Tempe for boys and girls? Start with what your athlete needs to work on: handling the ball under pressure, getting balanced before a shot, moving their feet, or knowing what to do when a defender closes in. A useful training session gives those skills a purpose and gives players coaching they can take back to practice and games.

At Ballin Elite, Skills Lab is for boys and girls in grades 3–12 and combines coach-led work in ball handling, footwork, shooting, and game decisions. Families can try a $20 preview session before choosing their next step.

What do players work on in Skills Lab?

Skills Lab is structured basketball training. The focus is on developing skills players can use beyond an isolated drill:

  • Ball handling: controlling the ball while moving, changing direction, and preparing for the next action.
  • Footwork: working on balance, stops, pivots, and the steps that set up a drive or shot.
  • Shooting: practicing preparation and a repeatable shooting routine, with attention to how the player gets into the shot.
  • Game decisions: connecting a move to a situation, rather than choosing a move just because it looks impressive.

Parents can ask their athlete two simple questions after training: “What did you work on?” and “Where could you use that in a game?” Those answers can help make the purpose of a session clearer.

Skills Lab times and grade groups for boys and girls

Skills Lab meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at Ballin Elite:

  • 3rd–5th grade: 5:00–6:00 PM
  • 6th–12th grade: 6:00–7:00 PM

Reserve your preview ahead of time. If you are unsure which group fits your athlete, text 480-931-9500 before booking so we can help you choose a starting point.

Coached training and shooting reps serve different purposes

A shooting session gives a player dedicated time to practice. Coached training adds instruction, feedback, and work on the skills around the shot. An athlete may need help with the footwork before a catch, control on a drive, or the choice between shooting and moving the ball.

Our facility has a full-size half court and eight Dr. Dish shooting bays. The half court provides space for basketball movement and coached skill work; the bays provide a separate setting for shooting practice. Questions parents ask about basketball training

Does my child need to play club basketball?

You do not need to choose a club team just to ask about Skills Lab. Tell us about your athlete’s experience and goals, and we can discuss whether the group is a fit. Families interested in team basketball can also explore Ballin Elite Club.

Should we choose training or more shooting practice?

Consider the problem you are trying to solve. If your athlete wants dedicated shooting repetitions, ask about a bay session. If they need coaching on ball handling, footwork, shooting preparation, and decisions, ask about Skills Lab. You can discuss both options before committing.
